The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed as entirely false circulating reports that the Federal Government directed it to suspend enforcement of the ban on alcohol in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Prof. Adeyeye reiterated the Agencyโs commitment to safeguarding public health and implementing government policies transparently and in accordance with due process.
The Agency described the publications as โmisleadingโ and urged the public to disregard them entirely.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed that the ban remains fully in force and that regulatory enforcement actions have not only continued but intensified.
โAt no time has the Agency received any directive to suspend its regulatory or enforcement activities regarding sachet alcohol and small-volume alcoholic beverages. The report is false, misleading, and does not reflect any official communication from the Federal Government,โ the statement read.
Contrary to the viral claims, NAFDAC said it has already commenced the evacuation of violative products from manufacturing companies. According to the Agency, several producers have voluntarily ceased production of the smaller pack sizes, acknowledging that the policy is designed primarily to protect children from easy access to alcohol.
Citing its own findings, NAFDAC noted that approximately 50% of minors and underage persons purchase alcohol from retailers selling sachets and small PET bottlesโa statistic that underpins the necessity of the ban.
The Agency cautioned media houses and online platforms against the dissemination of unverified information capable of causing public misinformation and misinterpretation of government policy.
It urged stakeholders and the general public to rely only on official communications from NAFDACโs verified platforms for accurate updates on regulatory matters.
