The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has extended warm greetings to Christian and Muslim faithful across the country as they commence the holy seasons of Ramadan and Lent, calling for compassion, ethical journalism, and strengthened national unity.
In a statement issued by its National Secretariat, NAWOJ congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and around the world on the beginning of Ramadan, describing it as a sacred period of spiritual reflection, discipline, sacrifice, and renewed devotion to Almighty Allah.
The association noted that the holy month inspires compassion, generosity, justice, and humanity — values that align closely with the core principles of journalism and nation-building.
Similarly, NAWOJ felicitated with its Christian members and the broader Christian community on the observance of Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season.
The association described Lent as a solemn period of fasting, prayer, and reflection that offers an opportunity for spiritual renewal, growth, and deeper commitment to service.
As women journalists and media professionals, NAWOJ emphasized that both sacred seasons present a timely opportunity to recommit to ethical reporting, truth, fairness, and responsible storytelling.
The association stressed that at a time when Nigeria faces economic, social, and security challenges, the role of the media in promoting peace, unity, and informed public discourse remains critical.
The body called on its members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to use the period to amplify stories that promote hope, resilience, and inclusion, particularly those highlighting the struggles and achievements of women, children, and vulnerable groups. It urged journalists to ensure their voices serve as instruments of positive change and social cohesion.
NAWOJ also appealed to leaders at all levels to embrace the spirit of Ramadan and Lent by prioritizing policies and actions that alleviate hardship, promote equity, and strengthen national unity, noting that empathy, justice, and accountability should guide governance and public service.
The statement was jointly signed by the National Chairperson, Aishatu Ibrahim, and the National Secretary, Wasilah Ladan, who prayed for a peaceful and spiritually fulfilling season for all faithful, and for enduring peace, stability, and prosperity in the nation.
