In response to significant public criticism, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that the list of inmates approved for presidential pardon is not final and is subject to change.
The clarification comes after a wave of backlash targeted President Bola Tinubu’s use of the prerogative of mercy, which included controversial figures such as Maryam Sanda, who was on death row for killing her husband.
In a statement released on Thursday, Fagbemi confirmed that no inmate from the list has been released from custody. He explained that the process is currently at a final administrative stage, which includes a standard review to ensure all recommendations comply with legal and procedural requirements.
“This stage affords an opportunity for a final look at the list for remedial purposes, if any, before the instrument is forwarded to the Controller-General of Corrections for necessary action,” Fagbemi stated.
He emphasized that the verification process reflects the government’s commitment to due diligence and transparency, noting that “the rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness.” The Council of State had previously ratified the list of beneficiaries, but the AGF’s latest statement indicates a potential revision before any releases are made.
