President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to officially flag off the much-anticipated Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) on Wednesday, April 2, at the Uyo Township Stadium. Sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the festival will bring together about 3,000 athletes and over 500 officials competing across 17 sporting disciplines. The grand event will conclude on April 8.
In the buildup to the festival, the symbolic festival torch has toured the nine Niger Delta states, beginning in Bayelsa and culminating in Uyo, where it will be lit in a cauldron at the opening ceremony. The Uyo Township Stadium, typically a quiet sports venue, has undergone a remarkable transformation, adorned with vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and sports-themed decorations. In the words of a local observer, ‘Niger Delta Development Commission hand has touched it.’
With just a day to go, finishing touches are being made to the decorative structures, while crews work tirelessly to rig performance stages and live broadcast platforms. Security presence has intensified, yet locals continue to throng the stadium, with hawkers peddling their goods and traders setting up stands showcasing sportswear and footwear.
“This is looking like a carnival, and we are lucky to have the event in our state. Our stadium now looks like those places abroad that we see on television,” said Etuk James, an aspiring footballer, as he posed for a photograph against a tunnel adorned with images of Nigerian football legends Emmanuel Amuneke, Victor Ikpeba, Nwankwo Kanu, and sprinter Seun Ogunkoya.
The opening ceremony promises a fusion of sports and entertainment, featuring 40 music and comedy talents from the Niger Delta region, complemented by cultural dancers representing the NDDC states. Renowned entertainment impresario and Chairman of the Culture and Entertainment Sub-committee, Edi Lawani, revealed that the event will be powered by high-energy sound systems, an elaborate lighting display, and large-format screen projections.
Itiako Ikpokpo, Lead Consultant at Dunamis Icon, the festival’s organizers, assured attendees of a captivating night of music, dance, and cultural display. “We have lined up international afrobeat star Phyno to headline the event, alongside gospel sensation Eben, ensuring an unforgettable spectacle,” he stated.
As the Niger Delta gears up for this grand convergence of sports and culture, excitement continues to build, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying week of competition and celebration.
