President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State, following a deadly terrorist attack on the village of Worro.
The assailants, suspected to be Boko Haram militants, killed several villagers overnight.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President strongly condemned the “cowardly and beastly” attack. He announced that the new battalion will lead “Operation Savannah Shield,” a military initiative aimed at confronting the terrorists and securing defenseless communities in the region.
President Tinubu expressed his grief and particular outrage that the victims were targeted for resisting extremist ideology. He praised the community, which is Muslim, for refusing to adopt a violent doctrine.
“It’s commendable that the community members refused to be conscripted into a weird belief that promoted violence over peace and dialogue,” the President said.
The statement also directed federal agencies to work with Kwara State authorities to provide relief to the affected community and to ensure the perpetrators are tracked down and brought to justice.
President Tinubu prayed for the souls of the deceased and offered his condolences to the bereaved families and the people and government of Kwara State.
Over 170 locals were reportedly killed by Islamic terrorists in Kaima for their refusal to be converted to Islam.
