The Presidency has firmly denied circulating rumours about the removal of Senator George Akume as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), labeling the reports as “fabricated mischief” by unnamed agents.
In a statement issued Saturday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the government clarified that “there has been no change in the status of His Excellency, Senator George Akume, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”
The rebutta came amid growing speculation about a possible cabinet reshuffle while President Bola Tinubu is in Saint Lucia.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments,” Onanuga stated emphatically. “The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue.”
The Presidency expressed frustration with what it characterised as persistent attempts to create unnecessary tension within the administration. “Agents of mischief fabricated it,” the statement read, referring to the rumours without identifying specific sources.
“The Presidency advises Nigerians to disregard the fake news,” the statement concluded, marking the administration’s latest effort to combat misinformation about its operations.
Akume, a former Benue State governor and two-term senator, was appointed SGF when Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. His position makes him one of the most powerful figures in the federal bureaucracy, overseeing the day-to-day administration of government business.
