Former Attorney-General of the federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke has raised the alarm over the growing dangers of unilateral actions by global powers, warning that such conduct could erode international law and plunge the world into disorder.
He gave the warning in his keynote on ‘Unilateralism, Multilateralism and the New World Order,’ at the conference of the International Law Association, Nigerian branch, at the National Institute of Legislative Studies (NILS), Abuja, on Wednesday.
Adoke argued that the increasing tendency of *powerful nations to act outside established international frameworks is weakening the global system painstakingly built after the second world war, added that the world is witnessing a troubling shift where “rules are still written, but no one is quite sure who is obeying them anymore,” as major powers bend or ignore international law without consequence.
Spear News learnt Adoke’s concern is based on the principle enshrined in the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force except in self-defence or with Security Council authorisation.
