The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has issued a public statement informing customers that the current reduction in power supply across its franchise areas is a direct result of a decline in electricity generation on the national grid.
In a notice released to the public on Friday, the AEDC explained that the drop in available power is due to significant gas supply constraints affecting thermal power plants nationwide.
According to the company, data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) indicates that generation companies (GenCos) are currently receiving only about 40% of the gas required to operate at optimal capacity.
This gas deficit has severely hampered the amount of electricity injected into the national grid, leading to instability and reduced bulk power available for distribution to AEDC customers.
“The temporary reduction in power supply being experienced across parts of our network is due to a decline in electricity generation on the national grid,” the statement read. “Available system data indicates that power plants are receiving about 40% of the gas required for optimal electricity generation.”
The AEDC assured customers that efforts are underway to resolve the situation. NISO is currently working closely with the GenCos and gas suppliers to restore normal generation levels as soon as gas supply improves.
While apologizing for the inconvenience, the company appealed for patience and understanding from its valued customers.
