The Bauchi State Police Command has rescued a middle-aged man who was allegedly confined and kept in chains by his biological father for approximately seventeen years in Shadawanka village, Bauchi Local Government Area.

According to a press release issued by the Command, the rescue operation was carried out on February 16, 2026, at about 4:20 p.m., following a report from a concerned citizen.
The informant alerted police authorities that the victim, identified as Muhammad Lawan, popularly known as Babangida, had been unlawfully confined in his father’s residence for nearly two decades without proper care.
Acting swiftly on the information, a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division, alongside the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, proceeded to the location.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim in a severely emaciated condition and immediately secured his rescue.
The victim’s father, Mohammed Lawan, has since been arrested and is currently in police custody.
Authorities confirmed that the rescued man has been taken to a medical facility, where he is receiving treatment and undergoing rehabilitation as directed by the Commissioner of Police.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
He directed the Divisional Police Officer to conduct a preliminary inquiry and subsequently transfer the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further and thorough investigation.
Police authorities assured the public of their commitment to protecting human rights and ensuring that anyone found culpable in the alleged inhumane act will face the full weight of the law.
