The Delta State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its sustained war against kidnapping and violent crime, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation that led to the neutralization of two suspected kidnappers, the rescue of two victims, and the recovery of firearms and ransom money.
According to a statement issued on April 9, 2026, the operation was carried out by operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Squad in collaboration with the military, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi. The operation, which was executed in the early hours of the day at about 00:40, followed credible intelligence linking a suspected kidnapping gang to recent abductions reported in Ibusa and Enu-Ani Mega City, Ogwashi-Uku.
Acting on the intelligence, the operatives trailed the suspects to their hideout located along Obulu-Uku Power Line. The location, described as a bushy and strategically concealed area, is believed to have been used by the gang as a holding point for victims before ransom demands were made. Security sources indicated that the operation was carefully planned to ensure the safe rescue of the victims while minimizing casualties among innocent civilians.
On arrival at the hideout, the security operatives reportedly came under heavy gunfire from the suspects, triggering an intense exchange of gunfire. The operatives, however, responded with superior tactics and firepower, resulting in the eventual overpowering of the suspects. The swift and decisive response ensured that the two kidnapped victimsโboth femalesโwere rescued unharmed from captivity.
The two suspected kidnappers sustained fatal injuries during the gun battle and were later confirmed dead by a medical doctor after being taken to the hospital. Their identities were not immediately disclosed as investigations continue into the wider network of the criminal gang.
Following the operation, security personnel recovered significant exhibits from the scene, including one AK-47 rifle, nineteen rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and a sum of โฆ4,200,000. Authorities believe the money represents part of the ransom collected from previous kidnapping victims, underscoring the financial motivation behind the criminal activities of the gang. The recovery of these items is expected to aid ongoing investigations into the groupโs operations and possible collaborators.
In addition to the recovered items, the police have launched a comprehensive combing operation across surrounding bush areas to track down other members of the gang who fled during the confrontation. Security agencies are also working to identify the full network of the syndicate, including potential informants and logistics suppliers who may have supported the groupโs activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the operatives for their professionalism, bravery, and tactical execution of the operation. He also acknowledged the crucial role played by the military in the joint operation, emphasizing that such inter-agency collaboration remains vital in the fight against organized crime.
Oyeniyi reiterated the commandโs commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal elements across the state, noting that kidnapping and other violent crimes would continue to be met with firm resistance. He assured residents that the police remain fully committed to safeguarding lives and property, and that no effort would be spared in dismantling criminal networks operating within the state.
He further appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide credible and timely information to security agencies. According to him, community intelligence remains one of the most powerful tools in identifying and apprehending criminals before they can carry out further attacks.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the command, SP Bright Edafe, also reaffirmed the commandโs dedication to maintaining law and order, stating that the operation is part of a broader strategy to eliminate kidnapping syndicates and restore confidence among residents.
The successful rescue of the victims and recovery of weapons and ransom money have been widely viewed as a significant win for law enforcement in Delta State. However, security analysts note that while such operations are commendable, sustained intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation, and community engagement will be key to eradicating kidnapping and other forms of organized crime in the region.
As investigations continue, authorities are hopeful that further breakthroughs will be achieved, leading to the arrest of remaining members of the gang and the disruption of similar criminal networks operating across the state. For now, the operation stands as a strong statement of intent from security forces determined to reclaim public safety and restore peace across Delta State.
