Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday stormed the Ogbomoso residence of the family of Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-styled Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), and arrested his elderly father .
A family friend who was visiting the family on Monday morning was also taken into custody, leaving Adeyemi’s aged mother in a state of shock .
The arrest was confirmed by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), who condemned the action. “The father has been arrested. There is no legal basis for substituted arrests. The young man has promised to show up in court, so why arrest his father?” Falana said in a telephone conversation with Punch correspondent .
Eyewitnesses told Punch that police officers arrived at the premises in four vehicles before taking Adeyemi’s father away. One neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the officers did not allow neighbours to intervene before whisking the elderly man away in a waiting vehicle .
The development comes amid an ongoing forgery and impersonation case against Adeyemi, who is facing an eight-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Federal Government has accused him of forging an appointment letter and operating a fictitious agency that the Presidency maintains was never legally established .
The Police had yet to issue an official statement on the operation as of press time .
