Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has identified a failure in execution as the core differentiator between nations that have successfully lifted citizens out of poverty and those, like Nigeria, that have not.
Speaking at the maiden Lagos Business School (LBS) All MBA Students Conference, which also hosted MBA students from Cambridge Universityโs Judge Business School, Obi contrasted the progress of Asian nations with Nigeria’s backsliding. He later shared key points from his keynote address on his X platform.
Obi, speaking on the conferenceโs theme, โExecution as a Competitive Edge,โ stated that while planning is important, it is meaningless without effective implementation. He argued that tangible progress is delivered by leadership that possesses the right character and competence.
โExecution that delivers results is driven by competent and responsible leadership with capacity, compassion, and character to drive disciplined and committed implementation of sound policies and strategies,โ Obi said.
He pointed to the measurable successes of China, India, and Vietnam during the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) eras as proof of this principle.
โThrough consistent execution, China lifted over 430 million people out of poverty, India lifted 270 million, while Vietnam lifted 45 million, significantly improving their Human Development Index (HDI),โ he cited.
However, he expressed deep regret that Nigeriaโs story is one of stark contrast, despite committing to the same global goals.
โWhile these countries and others are lifting people out of poverty, more people are falling into poverty in Nigeria, with over 130 million Nigerians presently classified as multidimensionally poor,โ he lamented.
Obi stressed that the lack of competent leadership and inconsistent execution has left Nigeria struggling. He expanded his argument beyond government, noting that the same principle of responsible leadership applies to sustaining successful corporations.
For Nigeria to reverse its decline, Obi concluded, the nation requires a new caliber of leader. He argued that the country’s path to recovery depends on selecting leaders with โcapacity, compassion, character, and commitment to disciplined execution.โ
