Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has donated N15 million to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Dental Students Association to support the upgrading of their laboratory facilities.
The donation comes after the association appealed for N40 million to meet accreditation requirements and expand their graduation quota.
Obi who disclosed the intervention in a statement on his social media handle, explained that he had delayed public commentary out of respect for the national mourning period following the death of former President Shehu Shagari.
“Now that the mourning has officially ended, I felt it was important to act without delay,” he said. “Today, I visited, because we cannot, in good conscience, continue to allow our young people to suffer due to leadership failure.”
The former Anambra State governor expressed dismay over Nigeria’s misplaced priorities, where critical sectors like education and healthcare suffer neglect while public funds are lavished on non-essential projects.
“I continue to question the kind of country we are building, where our leaders and public servants spend millions on luxury cars and ignore critical areas of development, health, education, and pulling people out of poverty,” Obi said. “It is a tragedy of misplaced priorities.”
He further criticised the allocation of billions to infrastructure projects like conference centres and bus parks while basic educational and medical facilities struggle.
“When we fail to prioritise education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, but invest billions in conference centres and bus parks, we betray our youth and undermine the future of our dear nation,” he stated. “We must invest in the future of the Nigerian youth.”
