The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has issued a strong public clarification denouncing two widely circulated images as “fake and doctored.” The former Anambra State Governor described the pictures, one purporting to show him with former US President Donald Trump and another with the former Chairman of the Lagos State Parks Management Committee, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, as completely fabricated.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi stated that his attention was drawn to the images and their accompanying false narratives, which he said were designed to mislead the public. One of the images falsely claimed that Donald Trump had praised him, while the other sought to create an impression of a political meeting with MC Oluomo.
“Let me state categorically that both pictures are fake and doctored, and the accompanying stories are entirely false,” Obi declared. “I have not met Mr. Trump recently, nor have I had any such meeting with MC Oluomo.”
The Labour Party flagbearer expressed deep concern over the rising tide of disinformation, warning that such fabrications are dangerous to public discourse. He highlighted that these falsehoods are deliberately engineered to confuse, misguide, and distract citizens from pressing national issues.
Obi urged Nigerians and the international community to exercise vigilance and verify information from credible sources before sharing it. He emphasised the need to resist what he termed a “culture of propaganda” that undermines truth and integrity in the political landscape.
“For the avoidance of doubt, if I had such meetings, I would have personally made them public on my X handle,” he added, reinforcing his commitment to transparency. “My politics has never been about seeking praise or cheap publicity; it is about confronting the real problems of Nigeria.”
Reiterating the core focus of his political mission, Obi stated that his energy remains dedicated to addressing Nigeria’s critical challenges, including insecurity, poor healthcare, educational decay, and poverty. He assured his supporters and the general public that his pursuit of a new Nigeria remains unwavering, anchored on the principles of accountability, rule of law, and transparency.
The statement concluded with his signature message of hope: “A new Nigeria is Possible.”
