Nigeria’s Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) will begin a two-day clean-up and enforcement operation along the Lagos port corridor on May 14, targeting chronic congestion and traffic bottlenecks around the Apapa and Tin Can ports.
The PEBEC Director-General, Zahrah Mustapha Audu, said in a statement on Saturday that the exercise, coordinated through the Ports and Customs Efficiency Committee (PCEC), was part of efforts to improve trade facilitation and ease the cost of doing business.
She said congestion, unauthorised checkpoints, indiscriminate parking and uncoordinated activities along port access roads had for years slowed cargo movement and increased logistics costs.
She added that the operation would involve the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Government, port terminal operators and other security and regulatory agencies.
She noted that the exercise was expected to improve traffic management, reduce cargo delays, and enhance operational efficiency at Nigeria’s busiest maritime corridor.
Ms Audu said the operation was not intended to disrupt legitimate business activities but to create a more predictable and efficient environment for port users.
PEBEC was established in 2016 to reduce bureaucratic constraints and improve Nigeria’s business climate.
