Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, has condemned the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for politicizing the recent killing of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area.
Ohonbamu reiterated Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to peace and unity in Edo State. He noted that the Governor strongly condemned the attack, calling it unacceptable. The Governor also directed security agencies to track down those responsible.
“When the Governor heard about the incident at night, he traveled from Abuja to Uromi the next morning. He immediately ordered security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Ohonbamu stated.
He added that the Governor later visited Kano, where the victims came from. There, he met with the state Governor and the bereaved families. “This is a difficult time, and Governor Okpebholo has risen to the challenge,” he said.
Ohonbamu criticized Chris Nehikhare, PDP Publicity Secretary, for blaming the state’s security situation for the killings. He described the statement as unfortunate and misleading.
“The actions of the perpetrators are wicked and inhuman. Every right-thinking Nigerian is outraged. The Governor swiftly moved to ensure those responsible are apprehended. Anyone with useful information should assist law enforcement,” he added.
To aid investigations, the Governor suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP. Friday Ibadin (RTD). Ohonbamu stressed that Governor Okpebholo’s security reforms should be acknowledged, rather than exploited for political gain.
“Security agencies in the state have been mobilized with new vehicles and motorcycles, a move not seen in the past,” he said. He accused the PDP of trying to shift blame for its eight-year failure to address insecurity.
“It is laughable that the PDP, which failed to secure Edo for eight years, now claims to advocate for public safety. Their administration misused security votes and failed to prevent crises. The insecurity we face today is a consequence of their bad governance.”
Ohonbamu urged the PDP to stop exposing its failures, adding that they have no moral justification to call for a security summit.
