Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has taken a swipe at former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following the latter’s claim that he is facing threats of arrest from security agencies.
Adeyanju on his Facebook account on Wednesday, drew attention to what he described as El-Rufai’s sudden change of stance—from a strongman who cracked down on dissent to a self-declared victim of political persecution.
Adeyanju wrote:
“El-Rufai said they are planning to arrest him soon. El-Rufai arrested everyone who criticized him in Kaduna. His critic Dadiyata who was abducted in front of his wife and daughter disappeared till today without trace. The oppressors of yesterday are now comrades.”
The comment was a direct response to the former governor’s interview with BBC Hausa Service, in which he alleged that security operatives were plotting to detain him.
El-Rufai, now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), disclosed that four of his former associates in Kaduna had already been arrested, warning that his arrest may be imminent.
“About four people we worked with in Kaduna have been arrested. So, it may only be a matter of time before they come for me as well,” El-Rufai said.
His remarks come amid growing public attention to the arrest and prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami. Malami is currently being held by the EFCC over allegations of abuse of office and money laundering, and was later re-arrested by the DSS over suspected links to terrorism financing.
