Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, former Minister of State for Labour and Employment and APC candidate for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, on their historic victory in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, where they defeated Japan 2-1 to become the first African nation to win the championship.
In a statement released by her media office, Onyejeocha described the team’s victory as one of the proudest moments in Nigerian football in recent years, noting that the Flamingos have not only restored the nation’s pride on the global stage but have also reminded Nigerians of the boundless potential of the girl child when given the right platform, encouragement and support.
“The Flamingos have done more than win matches. They have won the hearts of a nation, conquered the world and inspired millions of young girls to believe that their dreams are valid,” she said.
She praised the team’s discipline, composure under pressure, resilience and unyielding team spirit, describing them as qualities that define the Nigerian girl child at her best.
“These young women are worthy ambassadors of our country, and they deserve every honour and celebration,” Onyejeocha added.
As a longstanding promoter of women’s empowerment, the former Minister noted that the team’s success is a powerful reminder of what young girls can achieve when parents, schools, communities and government deliberately invest in their talent and create room for them to excel.
She urged stakeholders at all levels to treat this moment as a challenge to strengthen support for the girl child in sports, education and every other field of endeavour.
Onyejeocha commended the coaching crew and the Nigeria Football Federation for their dedication, tactical discipline and hard work, and praised the players for their focus, humility and resolve throughout the tournament, including their emphatic 3-1 semi-final victory over Brazil.
