Nigerian main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is embroiled in a fresh internal crisis as the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, has dismissed claims by the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, that his statement on the party’s scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting was “unauthorised” and “premature.”
Ologunagba, in a rebuttal, reaffirmed that the 100th NEC meeting will proceed as earlier scheduled on Monday, 30th June 2025, at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.
Spear News reports that Damagun had on Monday publicly disowned Ologunagba’s announcement, describing it as a personal opinion that did not reflect the party’s official position.
“My attention, as the Ag. National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been drawn to a recent press interaction and comments made by our National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, concerning the Party’s scheduled 100th NEC meeting,” Damagun said.
He further stated: “Let me clearly and unequivocally state that the comment by Hon. Debo Ologunagba was made without the authority or approval of the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great Party. The comments were made prematurely and without due consultation.”
Damagun also revealed that a meeting had been scheduled for Tuesday, 24th June 2025, between PDP leaders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to address concerns raised in an INEC letter.
He expressed dismay that Ologunagba spoke publicly before this engagement.
“It is shocking and unfortunate that such a sensitive matter was addressed publicly without recourse to established internal processes or the leadership of the Party,” he said.
However, Ologunagba, in his announcement on Tuesday, clearly stated that the NEC meeting was a resolution of the 99th NEC meeting held on 27th May 2025, and was not an individual decision.
“All members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the general public may recall that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our great Party at its 99th meeting held on Tuesday, 27th May, 2025 unanimously resolved to hold the 100th NEC meeting on Monday, 30th June, 2025,”Ologunagba’s statement read.
He further reminded NEC members of the scheduled meeting, stating:
“Distinguished members of NEC are hereby reminded of the scheduled 100th NEC meeting as earlier summoned.
