Morris Monye, the Obidient Movement’s director of mobilisation, has revealed that a coordinator for Peter Obi’s supporters in Edo State squandered one million naira in campaign funds on a sports bet in 2023.
The incident occurred after the group entrusted the individual with the money because it had no official bank account.
Mr Monye made this revelation in a post on X on Thursday, explaining that “We raised almost 1m naira for mobilisation in Edo state which the Obidient leadership gave to one of the members to help hold for the Edo state Obidient chapter as there is no official account.”
He further stated that when it was “time to use money for activities, the person could not bring out money. He had one excuse or the other. I was so disappointed. Like over how much?”
According to Monye, the matter was escalated to the police, after which the coordinator confessed to misusing the funds. “He confesses that he used the money for betting. (Chelsea vs PSG precisely).”
After being forced to refund the full amount, the individual reportedly left the movement and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in his local ward in Oredo LGA Ward 7.
This incident adds to a series of public disagreements over financial management that have emerged within Peter Obi’s support base since the conclusion of the 2023 presidential election.
The former Anambra governor had garnered significant grassroots backing and substantial donations from young Nigerians during his campaign.
