Dr. Charles Ugomuoh, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 Imo State governorship election, has predicted that Peter Obi would become a nightmare for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election if he secures the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Ugomuoh made the declaration during a recent interview with journalists. He stated that the election would be particularly tough for the APC if the former Anambra State Governor emerges as the presidential candidate for the coalition ADC.
Responding to criticisms of Obi for potentially leaving the Labour Party, Ugomuoh defended his right to choose a political platform. He noted that while Obi has “one leg in the LP and another leg outside,” he is well within his constitutional rights to move. “Those who are saying that Obi has gone from one party to the other, have no case because he has that right. The constitution and politics still allow that movement,” he stated.
Ugomuoh, a former Assistant Inspector General of Police, also commented on the internal issues within the Labour Party, suggesting that Obi’s popularity had caused a rift. “The advent of Obi transformed the LP. He became a shining star in the party and that is what is still bothering the party,” he said, adding that the top hierarchy had “tasted the pie” and now found it difficult to abide by the party’s own rules and constitution.
Shifting focus to state matters, Ugomuoh commended Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma for increasing the minimum wage for civil servants to N104,000, insisting that it is sustainable.
He argued that the governor must have “done his homework very well” before taking the step and urged him to ensure it is not just a “political statement but a promise that must come to fulfilment.”
He lamented that politicians have “weaponized poverty” against the citizenry, making voters more interested in short-term gains than long-term development. He also expressed hope that the ‘japa’ syndrome, or trend of emigration, would fizzle out if leaders prioritise the people, stating, “If things are done the right way… people are sure of their daily bread, things will change.”
