Former Governor of Anambra State and prominent Labour Party figure, Peter Obi, has once again criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, this time over the reported plan to disconnect the Presidential Villa (State House) from the national grid.
Obi’s rebuke comes in response to recent statements by the Minister of Power, who announced the government’s intention to ensure the State House operates on an independent power source, thereby reducing its strain on the national grid.
Speaking via a series of posts on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, Obi described the plan as a “distraction” and a symbol of misplaced priorities.
“Instead of fixing the national grid to provide steady power for over 200 million Nigerians, including micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) that are struggling to survive, the government is focusing on securing power for a select few,” Obi stated.
This marks the latest instance of Obi knocking the Tinubu administration over promises and policies regarding power supply. He drew a sharp contrast between the government’s treatment of the seat of power and its treatment of ordinary citizens.
“While they plan to light up Aso Rock, the rest of the nation remains in darkness. This is not the way to lead a country that is crying out for inclusive governance. We need a government that prioritizes the collective good, not selective comfort,” he added.
The former governor reiterated his call for a comprehensive overhaul of the power sector, urging the administration to focus on decentralized power generation and the improvement of transmission infrastructure to benefit the general populace.
