In a dramatic television interview, political activist Deji Adeyanju has made a series of serious allegations against Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.
Adeyanju claimed that Mr Obi once tried to give him a cash-filled envelope, which he refused to accept. He made these statements during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Show on Friday monitored by SpearNews.
This comes just after Mr Obi initiated a defamation lawsuit against Adeyanju for previous comments.
Adeyanju explained that the alleged incident happened after he had made social media posts suggesting that Peter Obi should become president with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his vice-president. He said that following this, “Obi started courting me but I try as much as possible not to see him.”
He then described a meeting that eventually took place in a suite. โHe thank me for all I have been doing. And then he went inside one of the room and brought out an Envelope containing money. He said it is for my coming,โ Adeyanju stated.
The activist said he firmly declined the offer. โI told him he did not know me. He should go and ask [former governor] Mimiko and others. I told him I should even be the one to support his Campaign with my money.โ
Adeyanju ended his story with a strong condemnation, directly quoting himself: โLet me said it again, Obi is a fraud and I will continue to say it.โ
He also made a striking political threat, indicating a major shift in allegiance. He said that if the opposition parties chose Peter Obi as a candidate, โI will rather vote for [President] Tinubu rather than vote for leader of a Mob”.
These new allegations are likely to intensify the ongoing public dispute between the activist and the politician. Peter Obiโs legal team has not yet publicly responded to these specific claims from the Friday interview.
The defamation case brought by Mr Obi against Adeyanju is still pending in court.
