Former US President, Barack Obama, has launched a direct assault on the policies and priorities of incumbent President Donald Trump, lambasting his approach to governance and his administration’s controversial immigration tactics.
Obama headlined rallies on Saturday for Democratic candidates in Virginia and New Jersey, events seen as a crucial indicator of the national mood ahead of the next presidential election.
He used the platform to draw a stark contrast between his vision for America and that of his successor, moving between pointed policy criticism and sardonic humour.
He targeted what he characterised as the Trump administration’s skewed focus, telling a crowd in Virginia, āAs for the president, he has been focused on critical issues like paving over the Rose Garden so folks donāt get mud on their shoes, and gold-plating the Oval Office and building a $300m ballroom.ā
He added sardonically, āSo Virginia, hereās the good news. If you canāt visit a doctor, donāt worry, he will save you a dance.ā
The former president saved some of his strongest condemnation for the administration’s immigration enforcement, referencing reports of raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
āWeāve got a president who deployed the national guard in American cities and claimed to be stopping crime waves that donāt actually exist,ā Obama stated. āWeāve got masked ICE agents in unmarked vans pulling people in off the streets, including US citizens, on the suspicion that they donāt look like real Americans.ā
He described the scene as being ālike every day is Halloween except itās all tricks and no treats.ā
Obamaās appearances were in support of key Democratic candidates. In Norfolk, Virginia, he stumped for Abigail Spanberger, the former CIA operative and congressional representative who is running for governor against Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. Later, in Newark, New Jersey, he campaigned for US Representative Mikie Sherrill, who is in a tight race against Republican state assembly member Jack Ciattarelli.
He framed the upcoming elections as a pivotal moment to counter what he portrayed as a self-serving Republican agenda. āThere is absolutely no evidence Republicansā policies have made life better for you, the people of Virginia,ā Obama argued at the rally. āThey have devoted enormous energy trying to entrench themselves in power and punishing their enemies and enriching their friends and silencing their critics.ā
In endorsing the candidates, Obama emphasised their pragmatic experience and character. He highlighted Sherrillās background as a navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, saying it made her āthe kind of leader who understands the missionā and āknows who sheās supposed to serve.ā He also touted Spanbergerās record as one of the most bipartisan members of the House of Representatives, presenting her as an antidote to Washingtonās political divisions.
