The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has directed Mediterranean Shipping Company to suspend its newly introduced shipping tariff amid mounting tensions across Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The council disclosed this in a statement on Monday, confirming it sent formal communication to the shipping firm regarding the disputed charges.
In a March 23, 2026, letter titled ‘Re: Suspension of Tariff Approval’, the council instructed MSC to comply with its earlier directive halting the increase.
The letter, signed by Margaret Ogbonnah on behalf of executive secretary Pius Akutah, was addressed to the managing director of Mediterranean Shipping Company.
The council said the existing tariff regime must remain until a stakeholders’ meeting reviews the proposed charges and their implications for port users.
“The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has formally requested your organisation to abide by the current tariff suspension until a stakeholders’ meeting is convened. Please accept the assurances of the executive secretary/CEO’s esteemed regards,” said the letter.
