The Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council have expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and reaffirmed their backing for the establishment of State Police, following a joint meeting on Wednesday at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the Forum commended the President and the National Assembly for their leadership in advancing the constitutional processes required for State Police creation.
The Forum stressed that with proper training, equipment, and support, State Police would be pivotal in tackling the nation’s security challenges .
The meeting comes as Nigeria’s Senate passed a constitutional amendment in June 2026 allowing states to establish their own police forces, a reform described as “one of the most significant constitutional reforms in the nation’s democratic evolution” .
The bill, transmitted by President Tinubu, is awaiting harmonisation between both legislative chambers and ratification by at least 24 state assemblies .
The Forum also commended member states for redeeming their monthly ₦1 billion commitments to the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund and urged prompt and consistent contributions. It called on traditional rulers, civil society, and citizens to support the Board of Trustees in fulfilling its mandate.
Beyond security operations, the Forum resolved to intensify efforts against root causes of instability, including poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and out-of-school children.
It emphasised sustained investment in education, livelihoods, agriculture, and youth empowerment to reinforce security gains.
The Forum pledged to strengthen intelligence sharing, community resilience, and collaboration with federal security agencies, while expressing appreciation to the President for his commitment to addressing security challenges nationwide.
The meeting adjourned to reconvene on a later date.
