The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has extended heartfelt felicitations to the Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the globe on the successful completion of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Rev. Dr. Joseph John Hayab, and Secretary General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, Northern CAN described Ramadan as a spiritually significant period that fosters devotion, sacrifice, and renewal of faith.
The association commended those who adhered to its teachings and prayed for the continued peace and prosperity of the nation.
However, Northern CAN also expressed profound grief over the recent killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, describing the attack as barbaric and a stain on humanity.
The association extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, praying for strength and comfort in this trying time and called for calm, urging Nigerians to resist calls for reprisal attacks, warning that vengeance would only fuel further chaos and suffering.
Furthermore, Northern CAN decried the increasing trend of stereotypes and generalizations that demonize Nigerians based on the actions of a few criminals. It called for national unity, stressing that evil should be addressed without recourse to religious, ethnic, or regional biases.
The association charged security agencies, the Edo State Government, and the Federal Government to ensure a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of the perpetrators. It emphasized that only through justice and accountability can Nigeria break the cycle of violence and foster national peace.
“As a nation, we must strengthen our justice system to ensure that those responsible for heinous crimes face the full weight of the law. It is only by doing so that we can build a more just and secure society for all,” the statement concluded.
Northern CAN reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for peace, unity, and religious harmony, urging all Nigerians to work together in ensuring a safer and more inclusive nation.
