Abuja, Nigeria – The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a public notice clarifying the official protocol for the rendition of the Nigerian National Anthem and the National Pledge at public events. The directive aims to standardize practices and uphold the dignity of the country’s national symbols.
The guidelines specify that at most official events, only the first stanza of the National Anthem should be recited or sung. The third stanza, which begins with “O God of creation, direct our noble cause…”, is now designated as the National Prayer and should be rendered at the commencement of an event.
According to the NOA, the recitation of all three stanzas is reserved for special national occasions. These include Independence Day, Presidential Inaugurations, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Democracy (June 12) Day, and the inauguration of the National Assembly, among other significant ceremonies.
Furthermore, the agency clarified that the National Pledge should be recited at the conclusion of an event, providing a clear and uniform sequence for proceedings.
The notice, titled “Correct Application of the National Anthem,” emphasized the importance of these protocols, urging citizens to “uphold the dignity and sanctity of our national symbols.”
This move is seen as an effort by the NOA to eliminate the confusion and inconsistent practices that have become common at state functions, school events, and other formal gatherings. The directive provides a clear framework for event organizers, government bodies, and educational institutions to follow, ensuring uniformity and respect for national traditions.
The public is encouraged to adhere to these new guidelines to foster a greater sense of national pride and orderly conduct during official ceremonies.
