Uchechi Kanu, the wife of the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued a vigorous defence of her husband, claiming he confronts adversaries more formidable than those faced by the late South African President, Nelson Mandela.
In a post on X, Uchechi Kanu drew a stark comparison between the two figures. She acknowledged Mandela’s historic struggle against apartheid but argued, “Nelson Mandela fought in the arena with those amenable to reasoning, despite its brutality. Mazi #NnamdiKanu, however, fights in the arena against forces far darker.”
She vehemently rejected the terrorism label placed on Kanu by the Nigerian government, instead proclaiming him “the greatest African Freedom fighter that exists.” She asserted his leadership over “millions of Biafrans scattered all over the world” under the IPOB umbrella and stated that Igbo youths and students stand in solidarity with him.
“Like any human, he is not perfect,” Uchechi Kanu conceded, “but he loves his people and his people love him, and many are willing to protect him with their last breath.”
Nnamdi Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre. He was convicted by Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja Federal High Court on terrorism-related charges stemming from his longstanding campaign for the secession and actualisation of a sovereign state of Biafra.
His wife’s public statements intensify the ongoing discourse surrounding Kanu’s legal status, his portrayal as a separatist versus a freedom fighter, and the wider tensions in Nigeria’s southeast.
