Nine people are fighting for their lives following a mass stabbing aboard a high-speed train in eastern England on Saturday evening, in a violent incident that has prompted a counter-terrorism investigation.
The attack unfolded around 6:25 pm on a London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service travelling from Doncaster to London King’s Cross. According to British Transport Police, a man armed with a large knife went on a stabbing rampage shortly after the train departed Peterborough station.
The situation was brought under control when armed officers from Cambridgeshire Police boarded the train at Huntingdon station. Witnesses described a scene of chaos, with one passenger telling The Times there was “blood everywhere” as people fled, while another described the violence as “like something from a film.”
“Officers immediately attended Huntingdon station alongside paramedics,” a police statement confirmed. “Ten people have been taken to hospital with nine believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries. One is being treated for non life-threatening injuries. There have been no fatalities.”
Two individuals were arrested at the scene and remain in police custody. While the motivation for the attack is not yet known, the involvement of counter-terrorism police underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the incident.
BTP Chief Superintendent Chris Casey called it a “shocking incident,” stating that cordons remain in place and train services through the area are suspended as the investigation continues. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the event as “deeply concerning” and urged the public to follow police advice.
