The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather advisory warning of potential flooding in parts of Niger and Kogi States on Tuesday, 9th September 2025.
The alert was contained in the agency’s Daily Weather Outlook, released on Monday.
According to the forecast, the country is set to experience a day of significant rainfall activity, with thunderstorms and moderate rains expected in many regions.
Residents in the Northern States, including Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, and Borno, are advised to prepare for thunderstorms throughout the day, commencing from the morning hours.
The Central Region, encompassing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau States, will see a mix of light morning rains intensifying into thunderstorms with moderate rains by the afternoon and evening. NiMet specifically highlighted the flood risk for communities within Niger and Kogi States.
In the Southern States, cloudy skies with pockets of light rain are expected in the morning across states like Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. This will give way to more widespread moderate rains in the afternoon and evening.
The agency has urged citizens to exercise caution, noting that the predicted thunderstorms could be accompanied by strong winds. These conditions may lead to hazardous driving conditions on slippery roads, a significant reduction in visibility, and the potential disruption of power supply and outdoor activities.
NiMet reiterated its call for communities in flood-prone areas to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant.
The public is encouraged to stay updated on the evolving weather situation by visiting the agency’s official website, http://www.nimet.gov.ng, or viewing its detailed video forecast on YouTube.
