The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says it has made significant progress in the recovery operations following Tuesday’s derailment of a Kaduna-bound passenger train.
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the NRC confirmed that a locomotive and one of the derailed coaches had been successfully retrieved from the accident site.
“The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, on Wednesday, 27th August 2025, returned to the site of the train accident of Tuesday, 26th August 2025, to personally oversee ongoing recovery operations alongside NRC recovery engineers,” the statement read in part.
The Corporation explained that the recovery team managed to lift one of the derailed coaches in addition to the locomotive that was earlier retrieved.
Dr. Opeifa commended the NRC engineers for their professionalism and resilience, stressing that their swift response ensured that the operation proceeded safely. He also acknowledged the support of security operatives at the scene, noting that they helped maintain order during the recovery process.
The NRC boss extended appreciation to journalists covering the incident, highlighting the importance of factual reporting.
“Dissemination of credible and factual information is crucial to help Nigerians better understand the true situation and the progress being made,” Opeifa said.
Reassuring commuters, the Corporation emphasized that restoring train services remains a top priority.
“The NRC wishes to reassure its esteemed passengers and the general public that every necessary measure is being taken to restore train operations in the shortest possible time. Passenger safety and service reliability remain the Corporation’s top priorities,” the statement added.
On Tuesday, the NRC confirmed the derailment of its Kaduna-bound AKTS train service around 11:09 a.m. at KM 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations. Emergency response teams, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals were immediately mobilized.
A passenger who spoke after the incident described the scene as chaotic, with commuters scrambling in panic to safety.
