Troops of the 177 Guards Battalion have restored order in Aso Pada Riverside Community, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, following a violent communal clash that left several dead and others injured. According to sources, soldiers deployed at Gurku Patrol Base responded promptly to reports of unrest in the community and arrived to find that some houses and properties had been set ablaze by youths of Fulani extraction.
Investigations into the incident revealed that the clash was triggered when a vigilante from the community shot a Fulani youth with a dane gun over a dispute, claiming the youth’s cow had eaten his mango. The initial shooting resulted in the death of the targeted youth and two others, which sparked reprisal attacks by aggrieved members of the Fulani community. The escalation led to the deaths of two additional individuals and injuries to five others.
Corpses and injured victims were evacuated to a hospital for medical attention, while the vigilante responsible for the initial shooting is currently in police custody. Troops maintained a dominating presence in the area, quickly calming tensions and restoring normalcy.
Authorities stated that efforts are ongoing to convene an expanded meeting involving both parties to investigate the clash further and apprehend any other perpetrators responsible for the violence. The swift deployment of the 177 Guards Battalion has been credited with preventing further escalation and ensuring that peace returned to the community.
