The latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed a continued upward trend in the cost of Household Kerosene (HHK) across Nigeria, with a significant year-on-year increase despite a slight monthly rise.
According to the NBS Household Kerosene Price Watch Report for July 2025, the average retail price per litre paid by consumers stood at N2,196.19. This represents a marginal increase of 0.16% from the June 2025 price of N2,192.63.
However, the more striking figure is the year-on-year comparison. The current price is a substantial 24.09% higher than the N1,769.86 paid per litre in July 2024, highlighting a sharp annual inflation in the cost of the essential commodity.
Significant Price Disparity Across States
The report also unveiled a wide variation in retail prices across different states. A state-level analysis shows that consumers in Delta State bore the heaviest burden, paying the highest average price of N2,598.21 per litre. They were followed by Edo (N2,574.57) and Rivers (N2,560.72) States.
Conversely, Abia State recorded the lowest average price at N1,679.31 per litre. Oyo (N1,763.40) and Bayelsa (N1,797.46) States were also among the states with the most affordable rates.
Price per Gallon Sees Even Steeper Annual Climb
When examined per gallon, the cost pressure on households becomes even more apparent. The average retail price per gallon in July 2025 was N8,695.90, indicating a 0.14% increase from N8,684.15 in June.
On a year-on-year basis, the price per gallon skyrocketed by a staggering 50.92% from N5,762.10 in July 2024.
For gallon prices, Edo State recorded the highest average cost at N10,285.57, followed by Kebbi (N9,733.55) and Delta (N9,691.96) States. Abia State maintained its position as the state with the lowest price per gallon at N6,746.89, followed by Bayelsa (N7,088.56) and Oyo (N7,135.29).
