The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Taraba state chapter, has threatened to protest over the prolonged delay in fixing the Namnai Bridge, in Gassol local government council of the state.
The association decried that the bridge is important to transportation and economic activities in the state but collapsed on August 2024 by a torrent rainfall.
The associationโs chairman, Bolyo Saleh, in a statement issued on Monday said the situation is โdisheartening,โ noting that there has been no visible progress on the project despite its strategic importance to residents and commuters, particularly students.
NANS averred that the absence of the bridge continues to pose serious safety risks, disrupting academic activities, and hindering socio economic development in communities that rely heavily on the route.
It also criticized lack of interim solutions, pointing out that no local or temporary measures have been put in place to ease the hardship faced by road users, insisting that the continued neglect has left many exposed to danger and unnecessary difficulties.
โNANS called on the North East Development Commission (NEDC), contractors, and other relevant government agencies to provide clear explanations regarding the delay”.
Further, the group seek clarification on whether funds were allocated for the project and how such funds have been utilized, as well as reasons for the lack of alternative arrangements.
It even demanded a definite timeline for the commencement and completion of the bridge, stressing that the ongoing situation reflects a lack of commitment to the welfare of the people, especially students.
โNANS Taraba State Axis will not remain silent while the safety and future of our students are put at risk,โ
Failure to address the concerns promptly could lead to lawful and decisive actions by the association”.
