The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has raised the alarm over the distribution of “unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste”.
In a statement on Sunday, NAFDAC informed the public about a counterfeit product already in circulation in Kaduna.
“The Post-Marketing Surveillance (PMS) Directorate received a complaint about the distribution of an unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste in Kaduna state,” stated NAFDAC.
It added, “Upon investigation, a team of PMS officers visited the outlet where the product was being sold. They discovered two suspected unregistered and counterfeit Colgate toothpaste products, branded as Colgate ActivGel 100g and Colgate Herbal 100g, available for sale.”
The products pose a potential risk to public health and safety, according to the agency.
It noted that the counterfeit products “were removed from the shop, and investigations are ongoing to track the distributors of the unregistered and counterfeit items”.
According to NAFDAC, the shop owner informed the team that the products were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative, but no proof of purchase was provided.
