Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim with immediate effect, ending a chaotic 14-month tenure at Old Trafford.
Former midfielder and club technical director Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge of the team on an interim basis.
The decision follows a dismal run of results and escalating tensions behind the scenes. Amorim departs with the worst win percentage (38.1%) of any permanent United manager since Frank OโFarrell in 1971, having won just 24 of his 63 matches in charge.
His position became untenable after an extraordinary post-match rant following the recent defeat to Leeds United, where he publicly complained about his โhead coachโ title and appeared to criticize the club’s transfer strategy. The outburst was the final flashpoint in a growing power struggle with football director Jason Wilcox, particularly over the failed pursuit of Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo and control over transfers.
Despite promising he would not quit, Unitedโs hierarchyโled by Sir Jim Ratcliffeโmade the decision for him. Amorimโs reign was defined by defensive fragility, a stubborn commitment to an underperforming 3-4-3 system, and a failure to build momentum, with the team managing consecutive wins only once.
His expensive signings, including Bryan Mbeumo (ยฃ71m) and Benjamin Sesko (ยฃ74m), failed to transform the teamโs fortunes. United finished 15th last season and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Fletcher, a respected figure at the club, will now steady the ship while the board begins its search for a permanent successor.
