Former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has raised the alarm, alleging a coordinated plan by security agencies to re-arrest him immediately upon his release on bail, in direct defiance of a court order.
The alarm was contained in a statement released on Wednesday by Mohammed Bello Doka, Special Assistant on Media to Malami, stating that reliable intelligence indicates operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have mounted surveillance and are on standby to execute the plan.
The former AGF along two others were released on bail today by a court sitting in Abuja.
This follows weeks of a stalled release, where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declined to honour a bail order granted to Malami by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
The office labels this pattern—granting bail while preparing fresh, “trump-up” charges to ensure continued detention—as a “grave assault on constitutional safeguards and an abuse of state power.”
“What is being demanded is nothing more than obedience to court orders, fairness, and constitutional protection, as guaranteed to every citizen,” the statement read. It further warned that Malami’s safety, and that of his family and staff, is under “serious threat” due to these actions, holding responsible authorities accountable for any harm.
The release calls on the legal community, civil society, and the international community to monitor the situation and prevail upon security agencies to act within the law. Updates have been promised as events unfold.
