Governor of Oyo State, Oluseyi Makinde, has issued a strong political message ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that hidden alliances within the opposition could mislead party members and the Nigerian public.
Speaking after a meeting with journalists, Makinde alleged that a meeting involving Nyesom Wike and Bola Ahmed Tinubu had led to a promise to hold the structure of the People’s Democratic Party for the President ahead of the 2027 elections.
He reaffirmed the confidence of opposition leaders in the strength of the Nigerian people following a closed-door meeting with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, in Bauchi.
The meeting, which lasted several hours, is believed to be part of ongoing consultations among key political figures amid rising political realignments ahead of future elections.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Makinde said the opposition was not opposed to individuals supporting the current administration but insisted such support should be declared openly.
“We are not begrudging anyone. In a democracy, everyone has the right to support whoever they choose. But if you want to support the President, then do so openly. That is our position,” he said.
The Oyo governor also expressed confidence that public support would ultimately outweigh institutional influence.
“They may have the power of government, they may have the judiciary, and they may have the Independent National Electoral Commission behind them, but we are confident that we have the people behind us,” Makinde added.
On his part, Governor Bala Mohammed addressed the issue of reconciliation within the opposition, stressing that the process was being guided by the courts and not personal interests.
“On the issue of reconciliation, let me also clarify that it is not something we have personally called for. It is something that has been suggested as a solution through competent courts of jurisdiction — the Federal High Court of Nigeria and the Court of Appeal of Nigeria. We believe strongly in the rule of law, and we will continue to respect the decisions of the courts,” he said.
The Bauchi governor further emphasised the need for unity and stability in the country.
“However, we also believe that there are no irreconcilable differences in Nigeria, especially when it comes to national unity and political stability. At the end of the day, what matters most is the interest of the Nigerian people,” Mohammed stated.
