The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has presented its presidential candidate, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, as the most capable of all the contenders in the 2027 race, with his running mate, Alhaji Lawal Daura, urging Nigerians to put competence above ethnicity when they vote.
Daura made the case in Abuja while hosting leaders of the Northern Patriotic Front (NPF) at the APM presidential campaign headquarters, according to a statement by Richard Ihediwa, Director of Strategic Communication of the Makinde Daura Presidential Campaign Organization (MDPCO).
The northern group had visited to confer an award on Makinde and to declare support for him and the APM in the January 16, 2027 poll.
Daura said the governor’s record in business and in public office set him apart, and challenged those still doubting his competence to study his antecedents and performance.
“I was happy when you said that you went to Oyo State and you have confirmed the quality of governance and unprecedented development by our Presidential candidate. So, I challenge those who are still doubting whether our candidate is the most competent to be elected as President to examine his antecedents and performance,” he said.
“Before venturing into politics and eventually becoming governor of Oyo State, he had established himself as a successful businessman and a man with considerable experience in finance.
Beyond his personal integrity, we should also examine his record in public office. What has he achieved? Look at his performance. His transparency and accountability set him apart.”
The APM vice presidential candidate reassured the country, especially the North, that Makinde would run an inclusive four year transitional government of national unity focused on resetting the economy, education, security architecture and the country’s socio political space.
He warned that Nigeria’s poverty and governance challenges were too grave for voters to keep backing leaders without scrutinising what they did with the opportunities they were given.
“We in Nigeria are confronted with enormous challenges, particularly poverty and poor governance. We cannot afford to continue supporting leadership without examining what individuals have done with the opportunities entrusted to them,” Daura said.
He also called on parties, politicians and other stakeholders to invest in public enlightenment so that Nigerians can make informed choices at the polls.
In his remarks, NPF President Alhaji Ali Abacha pledged the support of northern political stakeholders for the APM ticket, saying the region was comfortable with Makinde’s candidacy, his reset message and his four year transitional government plan. He also praised the choice of Daura, a security expert, as running mate, saying it signals a serious commitment to tackling insecurity.
