Currently leading the Conmebol standings with 31 points, Argentina faces an away game against Chile on Thursday before hosting Colombia at Buenos Aires’ Estadio Monumental.
The squad includes three newcomers alongside Messi: defenders Kevin Lomónaco (Independiente) and Mariano Troilo (Belgrano), and 17-year-old forward Franco Mastantuono from River Plate. Mastantuono has already attracted interest from major European clubs and is making his international debut.
Scaloni will need to navigate several absences caused by injuries and suspensions. Benfica defender Nicolás Otamendi is suspended, prompting a choice between Olympique Marseille’s Leonardo Balerdi and Lens’ Facundo Medina to partner with Tottenham’s Cristian Romero in central defence.
Midfield changes are also anticipated, with Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister sidelined by injury, while Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández and AS Roma’s Leandro Paredes face one-match suspensions due to yellow card accumulation.
Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez is expected to join the squad on Wednesday after his team’s 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final but is unlikely to feature against Chile on Thursday.
