The United States Mission in Nigeria has spotlighted Tope Awotona, a Lagos-born entrepreneur and founder of the global scheduling platform, Calendly, describing him as “a shining example of how Nigerian Americans contribute to American excellence in business and technology.”
Awotona’s story is one of resilience, determination, and innovation. Born in Lagos, his early life was marked by tragedy after his father was killed in a carjacking when Tope was only 12 years old. The loss left a deep scar, but it also shaped his determination to succeed and build a life of impact. Not long after, his family moved to the United States, where he pursued education and later graduated in Business Administration from the University of Georgia.
Like many entrepreneurs, Awotona’s journey was not without setbacks. He tried his hands at several businesses, including ventures in dating services and e-commerce, but none succeeded. He spent years working in software sales with global firms such as IBM, Dell EMC, and Perceptive Software, gaining vital experience that would later prepare him for his breakthrough.
That breakthrough came in 2013 when, frustrated by the inefficiency of scheduling meetings, he decided to solve the problem himself. Awotona invested his entire life savings and even borrowed from his retirement funds to build what would later become Calendly, a scheduling tool designed to simplify the way individuals and businesses arrange meetings.
Operating from his apartment in Atlanta, Awotona launched the platform at Atlanta Tech Village. His product-led growth strategy, combined with a freemium model, saw Calendly spread quickly across industries. Its easy-to-use interface and efficiency made it indispensable to millions of professionals worldwide.
By 2020, Calendly was serving over 10 million users monthly, generating tens of millions of dollars in subscription revenue. The pandemic, which forced businesses and individuals into remote work, only accelerated its growth. In 2021, the company secured a landmark $350 million investment, valuing Calendly at over $3 billion.
Today, Tope Awotona is celebrated as one of the most successful Black tech founders in the United States, with Forbes estimating his net worth at more than $1 billion. Yet, he remains deeply committed to giving back. He has made significant donations to initiatives such as Black Girls Code and My Brother’s Keeper, and has supported employees in times of crisis, including during the conflict in Ukraine.
Awotona often recalls that his journey is rooted in perseverance and belief. “It wasn’t easy. I invested everything I had, even when people doubted me. Calendly was born out of frustration, but it became something that helps millions of people every day.”
From Lagos to Atlanta, his story is a powerful reminder of the potential of Nigerian talent on the global stage. The U.S. Mission’s recognition not only highlights Awotona’s personal achievements but also underscores the broader contributions of Nigerian Americans in shaping innovation, business, and technology in the United States and beyond.
