The Labour Party has scheduled its presidential primary for April 28 as part of a broader timetable for its internal electoral activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed in a letter addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and signed by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman.
According to the letter, the party has also outlined dates for its grassroots congresses, with ward congresses set for April 23, followed by local government area congresses on April 24, and state congresses on April 25.
Usman explained that the correspondence was to formally notify INEC of the party’s approved schedule of activities, in line with statutory requirements governing political parties’ internal processes.
She noted that the notification was made pursuant to relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), INEC guidelines, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which mandate political parties to inform the commission ahead of congresses, conventions, and key meetings.
The Labour Party leadership also recalled that earlier plans had been postponed to allow for wider participation among members, particularly to complete its ongoing digital membership registration exercise.
“With the registration process nearing completion, the party has now approved a new timetable for its elective congresses and national convention,” she stated.
The national convention, where the presidential primary will be held, is scheduled to take place at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State.
Usman urged INEC to notify its state offices to facilitate effective monitoring of the congresses and convention, in line with its oversight responsibilities.
She reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening democratic processes in Nigeria through transparent and inclusive internal elections.
