The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State has accused the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state of engaging in propaganda, hate speech, and an alleged scheme to extort money from party members and aspirants.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its State Publicity Secretary, Mazi Chidiebere Okoro, the LP described the current APC leadership in Abia as “notorious and desperate” for campaign funds.
Okoro alleged that recent press releases from the Abia APC were filled with what he called “hogwash” and personal attacks against Governor Alex Otti. He claimed that the APC leadership had failed in an alleged plot to turn the federal government against the governor and had now resorted to insults, blackmail, and needless abuses.
“These are the tantrums of a group of power mongers who lost their sanity after assuming leadership,” Okoro said in the statement. He added that most of the individuals running the APC in Abia are “unstable and unfit to manage any decent institution.”
The LP spokesman specifically criticised the state APC Chairman, Mr. Chijioke Chukwu, describing him as “embittered and immature.” Okoro alleged that Chukwu’s strategy for relevance had instead positioned the party for its worst governorship performance since the return of democracy in 1999.
According to the Labour Party, the Abia APC is frustrated that Governor Otti has refused to join their party, a move the LP claims the opposition hoped would give them political leverage ahead of the 2027 elections. However, Okoro stated that such frustration should not escalate into “hate and rascality.”
“Any respect Governor Otti enjoys from the federal government is based on his accomplishments and performance,” the LP spokesman said. “The reckless tantrums from a tiny faction of the Abia APC will have zero negative impact on him or his government.”
In a further allegation, the Labour Party claimed that the real agenda of the current APC leadership in Abia is to extort party members and aspirants while positioning themselves to collect campaign funds from the APC national headquarters. Okoro argued that the APC leaders know they have no support base or structure to win a governorship election in the state.
The LP called on anyone within the Abia APC who intends to contest the 2027 governorship election to declare their intention publicly so that debate and scrutiny can begin. It also urged Abians and the general public to disregard communications from the Abia APC leadership.
The Labour Party reaffirmed its support for Governor Alex Otti, thanking Abians for their backing and urging the governor to remain focused on governance.
