In a significant diplomatic shift that moves them away from Washington’s stance, key United States allies—the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia—formally recognized Palestine as a state on Sunday. The coordinated announcements mark a major break from their traditional alignment with U.S. policy and are intended to bolster the prospects for a two-state solution.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the decision was made “to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis.” He emphasized that a peaceful future requires “a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state — at the moment we have neither.” His Canadian and Australian counterparts, Mark Carney and Anthony Albanese, issued similar statements moments apart, with Carney promising a “peaceful future for both” nations.
The move, which is largely symbolic, grants the Palestinians increased diplomatic standing but does not change the dire realities on the ground in Gaza or the occupied West Bank. It comes against the backdrop of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where local health officials report over 65,000 people have been killed since the war began in October 2023.
Israel’s foreign ministry issued a swift and categorical rejection of the recognition on social media, calling it a reward for Hamas that “further destabilizes the region and undermines the chances of achieving a peaceful solution.” A group representing the families of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza also condemned the decision, stating any recognition must be contingent upon their immediate release.
The leaders of the three nations forcefully countered that the recognition was “not a reward for Hamas,” with Starmer and Albanese both insisting the militant group can have no future role in a Palestinian government.
This development signals a wider realignment among traditional Western backers of Israel. More than 140 U.N. member states have already recognized Palestine, and several European nations, including France, Belgium, and Portugal, are expected to follow suit in the coming days, further isolating the U.S. and Israeli position on the world stage.
