An advance team of three officials from the Office of the Abia State Governor was attacked by unidentified gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025.
The violent incident occurred on the road to Sam Mbakwe International Airport, specifically between Umuowa and Ihite junction.
According to an official Public Service Announcement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Citizen Njoku Ukoha Ukoha, the team was on official duty when ambushed shortly before reaching the airport junction. The assailants opened fire on the officials’ vehicle.
Importantly, the statement clarified that the convoy of the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, was not involved in the attack. The Governor was not present at the scene.
In a reassuring development, the announcement confirmed that no lives were lost during the frightening episode. The condition of the three team members or the extent of any injuries sustained was not immediately detailed in the brief release.
The attack has heightened concerns over the persistent security challenges along major routes in the region, even in proximity to critical infrastructure like an international airport.
The motive of the gunmen remains unclear, and it is unknown if anything was carted away from the officials.
As of the time of the PSA, no security agency has issued an official statement regarding the incident or any potential arrests. The Abia State Governmentโs announcement is expected to prompt a response and increased security presence on the route.
