The distribution of federation revenue for January 2026 has been thrown into a stalemate, following the rejection of a proposed N1.969 trillion figure by state governments.
The disagreement, which has persisted for over two weeks, has also delayed the payment of January salaries for public sector workers across many states.
The deadlock occurred at the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting held on January 20, where Commissioners of Finance representing the 36 states vehemently opposed the revenue amount presented for distribution.
The states argued that the N1.969 trillion did not accurately reflect the total revenue accrued in December 2025 and was insufficient to meet their current financial obligations.
The FAAC, which comprises officials from the Federal Ministry of Finance, the OAGF, federal revenue-generating agencies, and state commissioners of finance, typically meets monthly to review and share revenue from the federation account.
This month’s delay has disrupted the financial plans of state and local governments, leaving many unable to fulfill their monthly expenditures, including wage bills.
