The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially unveiled the timetable for the 2027 general elections, scheduling the presidential and National Assembly polls for Saturday, February 20, 2027.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the announcement on Friday at a press conference in Abuja, ending months of speculation about the election dates. According to the newly released schedule, the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow two weeks later on Saturday, March 6, 2027.
The announcement, however, comes against a backdrop of uncertainty surrounding the passage of the amended Electoral Act, which is currently pending before the National Assembly.
Prof. Amupitan acknowledged the legislative delay, noting that while the commission had finalized the timetable and submitted it to lawmakers, some aspects of the schedule of activities could be subject to change. He cautioned that the timeline for critical processes, such as party primaries and campaign periods, might be affected depending on when—and in what form—the amended act is eventually passed.
The commission had indicated earlier in February that it was proceeding with the timetable to ensure adequate preparation, even as it awaited legislative approval on outstanding electoral reforms.
Further details on the specific activities, including the commencement of voter registration and the deadline for party nominations, are expected to be released by the commission in the coming days.
