The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Federal Capital Territory (INEC-FCT) has officially launched a six week training programme for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who will serve as poll officials during the 2026 Area Council elections.
The intensive initiative, which commenced across all six Area Councils of the FCT on Thursday, is a cornerstone of INEC’s preparation, given that NYSC members traditionally constitute approximately 70% of the Commission’s ad-hoc election workforce.
Designed to build a cadre of competent and impartial personnel, the training is a direct offshoot of the existing INEC/NYSC Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). It is being conducted at NYSC Community Development Service (CDS) centers within each council, ensuring accessibility and allowing corps members to receive instruction in the local contexts where they will be deployed.
“The objective is to leave no one behind in terms of preparation. By training them within their areas of primary assignment, we are not only making it logistically feasible but also familiarizing them with the specific environments and dynamics they will encounter on election day,” the Commission explained in its official social media accounts.
The curriculum is a rigorous blend of technical and ethical modules, covering the operation of INEC’s election technology, precise voter accreditation procedures, result collation and transmission protocols, as well as security management and strict neutrality guidelines.
The program, which will run through mid January 2026, is expected to equip the corps members with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required for the smooth administration of the polls.
Upon completion, participants will be certified and deemed fully deployable for the forthcoming Area Council elections in the FCT.
This capacity building exercise underscores INEC’s commitment to enhancing the professionalism of its temporary staff and reinforcing the integrity of the electoral process at the grassroots level.
