President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerian youths of his unwavering support, declaring, “I am with you,” as he inaugurated the Planning Committee for the National Youth Conference on Monday in Abuja.
The event, held at the Council Chamber of the State House, marks a significant step in the administration’s efforts to address the challenges facing the country’s youth and harness their potential for national development.
The committee, chaired by Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Development, was unveiled five months after President Tinubu announced plans for a 30-day national youth conference during his Independence Day broadcast. The conference aims to provide a platform for young Nigerians to voice their concerns, propose solutions, and play an active role in shaping the nation’s future.
At the inauguration, President Tinubu urged the committee to prioritise discussions on technology and agriculture, emphasising their importance in achieving food sovereignty and economic prosperity. He also called on Nigerian youths to seize the opportunity to redefine the fortunes of millions of their peers across the country.
“Look at me in the face, tell me where you think it is wrong, and suggest how it should be done. We will try to implement all of it as long as it is for the prosperity of this country,” Tinubu told the committee members.
He stressed the critical role of young people in Nigeria’s success, noting that they represent over 60 per cent of the nation’s population.
“Politics is about development and the future generation. I am glad you all are here as a committee to inspire today, tomorrow, and the day after. I reassure you that you are the hope of this country. Every decision taken is about you,” the President declared.
Tinubu also addressed the issue of youth migration, commonly referred to as “JAPA,” attributing it to a lack of investment in opportunities at home.
“This is your home, and the government of the day is all about you. Take it very seriously. Let us employ technology, let’s see how we can empower youths, and let’s work for food sovereignty. You represent over 60 per cent of our population. You are the heartbeat of our nation, and I hope you take this opportunity very seriously,” he said.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating a better Nigeria but emphasised that achieving this goal requires collaboration with the youth. “Mine is to assure you that we will do everything to make Nigeria a better place for you, but we can’t do it alone,” he stated.
Reflecting on the progress made so far, Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic trajectory. “I am with you. When we started, it seemed so foggy and hopeless. Today, the economy is turning the corner. Prices are falling, confidence in our economy is improving, and investors are looking in. You have the opportunity to advance the economy of this country. It’s all in your hands. Mine is to help navigate, push, and lift the heavy weight,” he said.
In his remarks, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, highlighted the conference’s objective of promoting youth engagement and inclusiveness. He revealed that the committee comprises representatives from the Federal Ministry of Finance, other related ministries, civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, and international bodies such as the World Bank.
Samson Itodo, a lead member of the committee and Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, praised the President’s initiative, describing the conference as a critical platform for youth participation. He outlined the structure of the 30-day event, which will include virtual consultations, regional meetings, and a one-week conference in Abuja. However, Itodo cautioned against political interference, urging the government to ensure the confab remains insulated from partisan influences.
Other members of the committee include Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission; Dr. Linus Okorie; Dr. Garba Aliyu; Babatunde Adeleke; and representatives from various youth organisations and ministries.
